The Photonics industry, covering the applications of light and other forms of radiant energy, is an emerging industry. But it is integral to our world and already plays a huge part in creating consumer products and, among many other things, facilitating the transfer of enormous volumes of information on the Internet and other data networks.
The UK has excellent research credentials in photonics, but has lacked a co-ordinated strategy to apply them.
The Photonics Leadership Group (PLG) exists to harness the potential of photonics in the UK, and to make it central to the country’s innovation strategy.
The Photonics Strategy Group’s report (Photonics: A UK Strategy for success - Painting a bright future)recommended the establishment of an industry/government strategic body to act as the UK voice for photonics and to provide strategic direction to all UK photonics stakeholders.
The PLG aims to work closely with those involved organisations or institutions to share information with ease and to influence policy development at regional, national and international levels. It will promote photonics to interested parties and the public in general.
It will work with relevant Knowledge Transfer Networks to implement a coherent strategy for UK photonics and develop photonics research strategies of UK Government, the UK research base, industry and the European Commission.
This website sets out the findings and provides strategies for achieving these aims.
